Chloramphenicol

  • Class: Broad spectrum anti bacterial
  • Action: It acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby preventing bacterial protein synthesis. 
  • Anti bacterial spectrum: Streptococci, Staphylococci, Brucella, Salmonella, Shigella, Haemophilus, Clostridum, Bacillus, Actinomyces, Corynebacterium, E.coli, Pasteurella, Vibrio, Rickettsia, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Spherophorus necrophorus
  • Dosage:               Oral, IV, IM
              Cattle: 2-4 mg/kg BID IV
                          20-30 mg/kg IM
              Sheep, Goat: 10 mg/kg BID IV
                                    30-40 mg/kg IM
              Dog: 25-50 mg/kg BID IV
  • Contra indications: Prolonged use may result in reversible bone marrow suppression and aplastic anemia.
