Ketamine


  • Class: Tranquilizer/ Dissociative anaesthetic
  • Action: It inhibits GABA, and also may block serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the CNS. The thalamoneocortical system is depressed while the limbic system is activated. It induces anesthetic stages I & II, but not stage III.
  • Indications: Immobilisation for clinical examinations and surgical procedures
  • Dosage:               IM, IV, SC
                Cattle: 2.0 mg/kg IV
                Horse: 2.2 mg/kg IV
                Goat: 22-44 mg/kg IM/SC
                Swine: 15-20 mg/kg IM/SC
                Dog: 10 mg/kg IM or 5 mg/kg IV
                Cat: 11 - 33 mg/kg IM/SC
