Acarbose

  • Class: Alpha glucosidase inhibitor, Anti diabetic
  • Action: It competitively and reversibly inhibits pancreatic α-amylase and intestinal brush border α-glucosidases, resulting in retardation of glucose absorption from hydrolysed complex carbohydrates and reduction of blood-glucose concentrations.
  • Indications: 
       Dogs, Cats: Management of diabetic animals, which responds poorly to insulins and dietary management.
  • Dosage:               Oral

      Dog: 12.5- 25 mg/dog PO BID immediately before food ( increase to 50 mg/ dog BID if no effect after 2 weeks)
       Cat: 12.5- 25 mg/cat PO BID
